What the box contains
The boxed version of GTA 6 has no disc. Rockstar's support article on editions and versions says the physical version "will contain a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box." Rockstar last updated that page on August 18, 2026; we checked it on September 19, 2026.
That applies on both platforms Rockstar names, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With no disc in the box, the console's disc drive plays no part: every copy of the game arrives as a download. Storage and pre-load details are tracked in our file size and pre-load article.
When the code arrives and when it works
Rockstar expects the physical version to be available for shipping and pickup from retailers starting November 12. Codes can be redeemed as soon as you receive them, and a code redeemed before launch starts pre-loading on November 12. Digital pre-orders start pre-loading the same day, at local midnight. The game releases on November 19.
Buying the box does not get you in earlier. At best, you start the download on the same day as someone who pre-ordered on the store.
How a physical pre-order differs
Rockstar lists a physical pre-order as one code covering the game and the Vintage Vice City Pack: the '55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. A digital pre-order, or a digital purchase before November 20, 2026, includes the same pack plus one month of GTA+ membership. The GTA+ month does not appear in Rockstar's list for physical pre-orders.
The other difference is the edition. There is no physical Ultimate Edition. Physical Standard Edition owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft store once their Standard Edition code has been used. What each edition contains is laid out in Standard vs Ultimate Edition.
Region matters, especially on PlayStation
Rockstar says code redemption is governed by the region associated with your platform account, and recommends buying from a retailer in the country of that account.
| Platform |
Code rule stated by Rockstar |
| PlayStation, United Kingdom |
UK accounts only |
| PlayStation, North America |
Canada and United States accounts |
| PlayStation, "Rest of EMEA and Asia" |
Accounts in a listed set including Ireland, Germany, France, Poland, Australia and New Zealand |
| Xbox |
Codes are not region-locked |
In practice, a PlayStation code from a US retailer will not work on a UK account, and a UK code will not work on an Irish or German one. Rockstar lists further PlayStation groups for Brazil, Latin America, Japan, South Korea, the Gulf and parts of Asia, and notes that product codes in Japan expire 170 days after the November 19 launch because of regional regulations.
Redeeming the code
PS5: PlayStation's instructions are to open PlayStation Store, press the triangle button, and select … (More) > Redeem Code, then enter the 12-digit code. The same option sits under your profile on the PlayStation Store website. PlayStation adds that "the voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account."
Xbox: Xbox Support describes codes as 25-character strings that can also be redeemed at xbox.com/redeem. Check which Microsoft account you are signed in to first: Xbox Support cannot move a redeemed code to another account.
A redeemed code belongs to that account. Rockstar's page says nothing about lending or reselling the box once its code has been used.
Before you order a box
Check two things on the retailer's product page: which country or account region the code is for, and that it is the Standard Edition. If the GTA+ month or the Ultimate Edition content matters to you, only a digital purchase gets it in one transaction. For the official store routes, see our GTA 6 pre-order guide.
