GTA Online and GTA+ around the GTA 6 launch: what Rockstar has said

Rockstar's own pre-order post and PlayStation's support FAQ both call Grand Theft Auto VI a single player experience, which settles the launch configuration and nothing beyond it. This page collects what is documented about GTA Online's ongoing updates, what the $7.99 GTA+ membership includes and drops on cancellation, how the free pre-order month works, and the three questions — online mode, character transfer, GTA Online's support horizon — that no official source answers.

The status, before the detail

Three things are on the record as of September 3, 2026, and one important thing is not.

On the record: Grand Theft Auto VI ships November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar describes it as a single player experience. GTA Online is still receiving content updates and weekly events. GTA+ is still a GTA Online-only membership, listed at $7.99 per month on the US PlayStation Store.

Not on the record: any online or multiplayer mode for GTA VI, any transfer of GTA Online characters or money toward GTA VI, and any date for when GTA Online support ends. Nobody official has said those things, so this page does not fill the gap.

The single-player line appears in three places

Rockstar's own wording came in the June 24, 2026 Newswire post announcing pre-orders: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S."

The PlayStation Store listing repeats it twice over. The feature list reads "1 player" and "Offline play enabled," and the Game and Legal Info block ends with "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."

PlayStation Support goes further and asks the question directly. Under the GTA VI pre-order offer article, the FAQ entry "Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?" gets a one-line answer: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."

That settles the launch configuration. It says nothing about later. No official page states that an online component is planned, and none states that one is ruled out. Treat both readings as unsupported.

Character transfer: no official statement exists

The question that keeps returning is whether a GTA Online character, a GTA$ balance or a garage carries into GTA VI. No Rockstar page, Newswire post or store listing addresses it.

There is exactly one migration Rockstar documents, and it belongs to a different product. The GTA Online PS5 listing opens with: "Continue your journey on PS5 and transfer your GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 with a one-time migration." That is the cross-generation move into the PS5 version of GTA Online. It has no connection to GTA VI.

GTA Online's summer, by the update record

The official GTA Online page still describes the game as "a dynamic and ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players" and carries a list of major updates. The Kortz Center Heist sits at the top of it.

That heist landed on July 14, 2026: an art robbery with its own scouting and prep structure, optional secondary targets that need extra hands and bag space, and an Art Studio expansion for the Mansion that hosts the job. Solo players can run it, but the listing is explicit that going alone locks off a secondary-target room.

The weekly rhythm has held since. The most recent GTA Online Newswire post at the time of checking is dated August 27, 2026: triple GTA$ and RP on Random Transform Races, a 6X bonus on selected races from August 28 to 30, drift tuning added for three vehicles, and the usual discount and Gun Van rotation.

On the membership side that pace is contractual. The GTA+ subscription terms state that a new GTA+ event period launches every three to six weeks, each with its own claimable set of benefits.

GTA Online is also a separate purchase on PS5, listed at $19.99 in the US store, with PlayStation Plus required for online play and lobbies capped at 30 players.

What $7.99 a month actually buys

GTA+ is a membership for GTA Online only, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. On PC the benefits apply solely to Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. Rockstar's FAQ is blunt about the older platforms: no GTA Online benefits on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or the GTAV Legacy PC version.

What the membership delivers each cycle:

  • GTA$500,000 paid to your Maze Bank account on each billing date.
  • Member-only Shark Cards carrying 15% bonus GTA$.
  • The Vinewood Club: a 100-vehicle garage with its own workshop, a rotating showroom with a free claimable car, and an in-game app for managing businesses and requesting vehicles.
  • A monthly benefit set: liveries, apparel, and GTA$/RP multipliers on selected modes, replaced each event period.
  • The GTA+ Games Library, a rotating Rockstar selection that at the time of checking held GTAV, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption, Bully, L.A. Noire, the Definitive Edition trilogy, Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars. Rockstar gives at least 30 days' notice before a title leaves.
  • A 20% discount on digital editions of library titles, valid only on the platform where the membership was bought.

Where GTA+ stops

The subscription is locked to one platform. The terms say a subscription bought in one store grants no access in another store or platform, so a player who moves between PS5 and PC needs two.

Unclaimed benefits expire. If an event period closes before you sign in, that set is gone, and cancelling forfeits anything still outstanding.

After cancellation you keep the property, vehicles and cosmetics you already claimed. You lose the monthly GTA$, the member Shark Cards, the ongoing discounts and all access to the Games Library. Library titles are borrowed, not bought.

The point that matters most before launch: nothing official suggests GTA+ carries any benefit into Grand Theft Auto VI. If GTA VI is the only reason you were considering the subscription, there is no published basis for it. Fees and benefits can also change — Rockstar's terms were last updated August 3, 2026, and reserve that right.

The free month attached to a GTA VI pre-order

A digital GTA VI pre-order on the PlayStation Store includes one month of GTA+. The conditions are specific: buy before November 20, 2026, redeem by March 31, 2027, one redemption per account, and after that month the membership auto-renews at the regular monthly price until cancelled. Existing members can stack the month onto a running subscription. Every PlayStation country store is eligible except Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, the Russian Federation and Taiwan.

The redemption screen states the date the free month converts to a paid one. Cancelling before that date is done in Subscription Management in your account settings.

Still unconfirmed on September 3, 2026

  • No official announcement of any online or multiplayer mode for GTA VI, at launch or later.
  • No official statement on moving GTA Online characters, GTA$ or property toward GTA VI.
  • No official end date or support commitment for GTA Online after November 19, 2026.
  • No official statement that GTA+ benefits will ever apply to GTA VI.

Check the numbers in your own store

The $7.99 figure and the pre-order terms are regional, so the listing you can act on is your own country's store page. Open the GTA+ product page in your PlayStation, Microsoft or Steam storefront and read the current monthly price there before you subscribe. To keep separating confirmed GTA VI facts from the rest, continue with our official versus rumor ledger, and check the platform status page if the PC question is what brought you here.
